Know Your English Level

Alright, let’s chat about your English skills. Maybe you’ve been wondering, “Am I at a beginner level or a bit more advanced?” That’s what we’re here to figure out.

CEFR Levels

Imagine strolling through the streets of London, striking up a conversation with a local, or effortlessly understanding the lyrics of your favorite English song. The Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) is your personalized roadmap to these experiences.

From basic greetings to eloquent discussions, CEFR outlines six clear levels – A1 (beginner) to C2 (mastery). Each level unlocks new opportunities, expanding your horizons and empowering you to communicate confidently.

The Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR)

The CEFR is an international standard for describing language ability. It divides proficiency into six levels:

  • A1 – Beginner: At this stage, you can use very basic phrases aimed at satisfying concrete needs. You can introduce yourself and others, ask and answer questions about personal details such as where you live, people you know, and things you have. Interaction is simple if the other person talks slowly and clearly.
  • A2 – Elementary: You can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance. This includes personal and family information, shopping, local geography, and employment. You can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a direct exchange of information on familiar matters.
  • B1 – Intermediate: You can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, and leisure. You can handle most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an English-speaking country. You can produce simple connected text on topics of personal interest and describe experiences, events, dreams, hopes, and ambitions.
  • B2 – Upper Intermediate: You can understand the main ideas of complex texts on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in your field of specialization. You can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party.
  • C1 – Advanced: You can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognize implicit meaning. You can express ideas fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions. You can use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic, and professional purposes.
  • C2 – Proficient: You can understand virtually everything heard or read with ease. You can summarize information from different spoken and written sources, reconstructing arguments and accounts in a coherent presentation. You can express yourself spontaneously, very fluently, and precisely, even in more complex situations.
